My grandma Jonita makes the BEST ham balls of anybody but she keeps her recipe a secret. So my other grandma and I borrowed the church cookbook where she goes to church to try a ham ball recipe from one of her friends. This is the cookbook from Prairie View United Methodist Women and the recipe is from her friend Tonya.
The recipe for the meat part:
2 1/2 lbs. ground ham loaf mix
2 eggs
2 cups bread crumbs
1 cup milk
For the ham loaf mix we went to the butcher at the grocery store and he ground up 1 1/2 lbs of ham to mix with 1 pound of ground pork.
We divided the meat mix into 16 parts and rolled them into balls.
To make the sauce, mix 3/4 cup supar, 2/3 cup water, 1/3 cup vinegar, and 1 teaspoon dry mustard.
Pour the sauce over the ham balls and bake at 325 for 2 hours.
When they came out of the oven at my grandma Becky's house, she kept four ham balls. I took the rest home to feed my own flock:)

I look forward to a report from your flock on how your ham balls compare to Jonita's ham balls. Perhaps your dad will weigh his words as carefully as the butcher weighs ground ham.
My two ham balls were grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreat!!! Thanks for coming over to cook.

Hi Sosie,
Thanks for coming by...the reviews from the flock aren't flowing in...maybe they don't know this post has been posted. From what I heard via the phone is that Jonita's ham balls are still a secret--her sauce is more of a barbecue sauce--no one does it like she does.
I do know that these are considered very good...the sauce is sweet but not overwhelming.
